Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) for Gloucester Companies
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) for Gloucester & Cheltenham Companies
What is SEO – and why should Gloucester & Cheltenham based companies be interested?
SEO a definition: Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or “organic” search results. Payment for placement is not involved.
So we are not talking here about Paid Search Marketing, also known as
Pay Per Click (PPC) or Google Adwords etc. (Though we can help you with
that if you wish as Google Certified Partners.)
What we are talking about is getting your company found by your target audience when they are searching on-line for the products and services that you are offering.
When your prospective customers are on the internet and searching for the things that you can provide them, you need to be visible. You need to be found quickly and easily. In short you need to be on page one of Google – ideally in the top 3 or 4 results.
Search Engine Optimisation is all about getting you there and keeping you there.
Why should Gloucester Businesses be interested in SEO?
Quite simply if you can get your company to appear at the top of the search listings when someone searches for your products or services then your business will grab the lion’s share of the available search traffic. What does this mean exactly?
Let’s create an example:
- You are a Gloucester based company selling a range of legal services and the gross profit per client is £500
- You have a conversion rate from your website of 4% i.e. for every 100 visits to your website you gain 4 clients.
- Let’s say there are – each month – 2,000 local searches on Google for the services that you are selling.
If you were on page 5 of Google your on-line business would in effect be invisible to any searchers who did not know your website address. In short it’s highly unlikely that you would ever be seen by any of your target audience.
However – if you could get your company onto page one of Google in organic* search position number 10 which is in fact the bottom of the page then you could expect to gain 2% of the available search traffic i.e. 2% of 2,000 = 40. With your website conversion of 4% you would gain 2 new clients each month.
Here is where it gets interesting; if, by using proven SEO techniques, you were able to get your company’s website into position 5 you would pick up around 6% of the search traffic i.e. 120 new visits per month giving you 5 new clients a month at gross profit of £2,500.
Position 3 would give you 11% or 220 visitors delivering 9 new clients per month.
Now – if you could get to the top of page one you can expect to get almost one third (32%) of the available search traffic.**
Using our example that would mean 640 prospective new client website visits per month and on a 4% conversion rate that would deliver over 25 new clients each month generating £12,500 of gross profit each month.
With the right Search Engine Optimisation strategy in place your business could be appearing at the top of the search engine ranking results. Just think what this could mean for your company’s bottom line!

One thing to consider is that even today the percentage of businesses using SEO correctly as a means of gaining a competitive advantage is still relatively small. SEO offers a real opportunity to get your business found ahead of your competitors. We can help you to do that.

*There are always 10 organic search positions shown by Google per page. There may be some paid for advertising appearing at the top of the page but these are not organic rankings – they are there because they have paid to be there.

The Value of Google Result Positioning
(6/12/13): below is a breakdown of average traffic percentages by Google result ranking for results 1-10:
ORIGINAL ARTICLE (6/7/13): Since Chitika Insights’ last report in May 2010 about the value of Google result positioning, the Google search algorithm has changed hundreds of times. With these changes in mind, the Insights team sought to update our Google result valuation statistics. To quantify this study, Chitika Insights examined tens of millions of online ad impressions in which the user was referred to the page via a Google search. From the referring Google URL, Chitika is able to extract the position that the webpage was on within the prior search results page. From this, Chitika can measure what percentage of Google traffic comes from each position of the search results page. The data set was drawn from a date range of May 21st to May 27th, 2013.
